Acura is set to launch its first-ever electric vehicle for the 2024 model year, and it’s generating quite a buzz. This unique offering combines the allure of a mostly forgotten name, GM parts, and a stunning concept car to create an appealing midsize SUV. With a glance, it’s clear that Acura has struck the right balance.
A Familiar Name Returns
If the name sounds familiar, it’s likely because Acura previously sold a niche vehicle called the ZDX from 2010 to 2013. The ZDX was ahead of its time, embracing the “SUV coupe” trend by blending the higher stance of an SUV with the sportier roofline of a coupe. However, it failed to gain traction in the U.S., with only around 7,000 units sold in three years. To put things into perspective, Acura sells about as many MDX SUVs in just one month.
A Unique Platform
The upcoming ZDX will differ from its predecessor in more ways than one. It will be built on the GM Ultium platform under an agreement with General Motors. This means that the ZDX will share its architecture with notable vehicles like the Cadillac Lyriq and the highly anticipated 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV. While Honda continues to develop its own EV platforms, they assure us that future Acura EVs will not solely rely on collaboration with GM.
Acura engineers have made significant tweaks to the Ultium platform, resulting in distinct specifications for the ZDX. The company plans to offer three different versions to cater to varying preferences.
Power and Performance Options
The A-Spec single-motor trim level is expected to deliver 340 horsepower with the electric motor powering the rear wheels. Acura has hinted that this variant will be priced around $60,000. On the other hand, the A-Spec dual-motor version will feature all-wheel drive (AWD) with two motors, although specific power figures have not yet been revealed. Acura claims a range of 325 miles with the single motor and 315 miles with the dual motor, but these numbers are yet to be verified by the EPA.
For those seeking exhilarating performance, the ZDX Type S will not disappoint. Equipped with AWD and boasting 500 horsepower, it offers an unparalleled driving experience. This top-tier model comes with an adaptive air suspension and high-performance Brembo front brakes. The estimated starting price for the Type S is approximately $70,000, and it is predicted to have a range of 288 miles.
As we eagerly await the arrival of Acura’s first electric vehicle, it’s clear that the brand is pushing boundaries. With a compelling blend of power, style, and innovation, the ZDX aims to make a lasting impression.

Quite a Striking Look
The Acura ZDX makes quite the impression with its striking design. While it may have some similarities to GM products, the body of the ZDX is completely new and uniquely Acura. Inspired by the bold Precision concept from last year, this SUV showcases a family resemblance to the RDX and MDX, but with its own dramatic flair. The long hood, featuring three prominent ridges, adds an extra touch of sophistication. The floating roof design further emphasizes the visual length of the vehicle.
A Tech-Rich Interior
Step inside the Acura ZDX and you’ll find a tech-forward cabin. At the center, there’s a high-mounted 11.3-inch touchscreen that appears even larger thanks to additional control surfaces mounted beside it. These surfaces give the illusion of more screen real estate, adding to the futuristic aesthetic. Acura has made sure to equip the ZDX with an intuitive touchscreen interface, as well as wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility – perfect for tech-savvy drivers.
Exquisite Sound Experience
Enjoy an exceptional audio experience in the Acura ZDX, as every model comes equipped with Bang & Olufsen sound equipment. A bespoke sound system, specifically engineered for this all-electric SUV, features 18 speakers, including four integrated into the headliner. With 14 channels of amplification and a subwoofer, the ZDX delivers powerful and sophisticated sound quality throughout the cabin.
Charging Convenience
While many automakers have embraced Tesla’s EV charging plug, Acura has chosen a different path. Instead, Acura is part of a joint venture between seven major automakers that will provide EV clients with access to a leading high-speed charging network in the United States and Canada starting in 2024. This brand-neutral approach ensures convenience for Acura EV owners without limitations.
Simplified Shopping Experience
Acura recognizes the importance of a seamless buying process. That’s why the company has decided to offer an omnichannel digital sales process for all Acura ZDX sales. Customers can enjoy a simple and intuitive shopping experience from the comfort of their own homes or at an Acura dealership. Pre-sale activities for the ZDX will begin later this year, with initial deliveries expected in early 2024.
