U.S. Representative and former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Kamala Harris
In a recent conversation with CNN’s Anderson Cooper about the upcoming 2024 presidential race, U.S. Representative Nancy Pelosi shared her thoughts on Vice President Kamala Harris. Cooper specifically asked Pelosi, a fellow California politician, whether Harris should remain on the Democratic ticket with President Joe Biden.
Pelosi responded by stating, “‘People say to me, “Why isn’t she doing this or that?” I said because she’s the vice president. That’s the job description. You don’t do that much.'” This comment by Pelosi has led some social media commentators to interpret her words as a lack of support for Harris, suggesting that by avoiding Cooper’s question, she was indirectly criticizing the vice president.
However, Pelosi did acknowledge Harris’ political astuteness, mentioning that early in her career, Harris was able to win the race for California attorney general despite initially polling at only 6%. Pelosi believes that Harris deserves more credit than she is given.
It’s worth noting that Pelosi is not the first person or politician to highlight the limited role of the vice president. John Nance Garner, who served as vice president under President Franklin D. Roosevelt, famously referred to the position as “not worth a bucket of warm spit.” Some accounts suggest that Garner may have used even stronger language, calling it not worth a “warm bucket of piss.”
Indeed, the role of the vice president is often perceived as less significant than that of the president.
