Accelerating the Energy Transition in Shipping

A.P. Moller-Maersk and CMA CGM, two prominent container shippers, have joined forces to expedite the energy transition in the shipping industry. With a shared aim to achieve net-zero emissions for their shipping businesses, these Danish and French companies are actively implementing decarbonization plans.

To pave the way for a greener future, Maersk has taken the initiative of ordering vessels that can operate on bio/e-methanol, while CMA CGM has opted for LNG-propelled vessels that are also compatible with bio/e-methane. Recognizing the need for further advancements, both companies acknowledge that the future fuel mix of shipping will include other streams to be developed in the coming years.

Under the newly established collaboration, A.P. Moller-Maersk and CMA CGM will work together to develop alternative greener fuels specifically designed for container vessel propulsion. This partnership will involve key activities such as:

  1. Development of Standards: The two shipping lines will jointly develop standards for alternative fuels and lay the foundation for mass production of green methane and green methanol.
  2. Operational Protocol: A crucial aspect of this collaboration is the establishment and maintenance of operational standards for green methanol vessels. Additionally, emphasis will be placed on expediting port readiness.
  3. Research and Development: A.P. Moller-Maersk and CMA CGM will actively invest in research and development endeavors to explore new alternative fuels, including, but not limited to, ammonia. There will also be a focus on developing cutting-edge ship technologies.

In their commitment to driving change, CMA CGM and Maersk extend an invitation to other international shipping lines to join them. They are also prepared to collaborate with regulatory stakeholders on a global scale to establish an international regulatory greenhouse gas framework.

As this partnership takes shape, the potential for a sustainable and environmentally conscious shipping industry becomes increasingly feasible. Together, A.P. Moller-Maersk and CMA CGM are determined to lead by example and shape a better future for maritime transportation.
